My first race

I mentioned in one of the previous posts that my goal for this year is to run the distance of a half marathon (21.1 km, or about 13.1 miles). Not sure if that’s every going to happen, but I’m off to a good start!

In September 2010 I decided to take a 12 week running clinic which helped me work my way up to running 30 minutes. I really liked the clinic, so thanks to Runner’s Den to help me!

After the clinic, I wasn’t really sure how to proceed (just because I didn’t really have a schedule to work with anymore) so I decided to register myself for a race. That gave me enough motivation to keep training.

My original plan was to participate in the Sun Run (really well known out here), but unfortunately we’re visiting Belgium at that point. Surprise surprise, yes, we will be visiting Belgium in April. So for those that want to meet up with us, let us know and we’ll try to figure something out. We will only be there for a week so it will be really hard to get in touch with everyone, but we will do our very best!

Anyway, back to the running part. Instead of the Sun Run I have now decided to participate in the “Harry’s Spring Run Off” in 17 days, 19 hours and 59 minutes (makes me really nervous)! I have no intention of trying to be fast, my only goal is to complete the race:). I will be working on some speed training in the future but at this point I would love to be able to cover the distance. I did my first 10 k run last week and it went surprisingly well (considering I hadn’t been running for over 1.5 weeks). The race however, is only 8k, so I should be able to do it without having too many problems.

I am currently training 3 times a week, but closer to the race I will most likely be running every other day. So I’m going to be fairly busy in the next couple of weeks:) But the weather is getting better and it’s light out pretty late nowadays so I should be fine.

Apart from my new hobby there’s not much going on. Although our schedule is getting busier for the month of March and obviously April. We’re planning to go to Whistler this weekend, we have a quiz night coming up, there’s a birthday party we need to attend, we’re going to the Bon Jovi concert, I’ll participate in the run, we’ll visit Belgium and for the Easter weekend we’re going to Ucluelet. So lot’s of exciting things coming our way!

I hope everyone is enjoying their week. We’ll talk to you guys later!
